However, it does not provide selective editing like darktable. In contrast to LightZone, RawTherapee has multiple features that are not available in darktable and it performs a little better in terms of the reconstruction of burned out highlights and noise reduction. It provides probably the most fine grained adjustments. Moreover, my experience is that adjustments can be made more precise in darktable. The realization of selective editing is solved much more elegant in darktable, IMHO. I think for most pictures a fixed order of operations is fully sufficient, so the user doesn't have to take care about it.

One last thing: if you have an android tablet, on that system the situation is much simpler, IMHO there is one single efficient app: Photo Mate R3, definitely impressive for the cost. LightZone appears active too, and although I dismissed it initially for not showing Curves adjustment, I now see it does features the same tool, just with a different interface which indeed is very efficient too, along with layers, zone selections etc.Īt this moment I'm still wondering which one is best, and still using the (mac only, paying but very efficient) Graphic Converter.
I feel the Darktable development is much more active than RawTherapee anyhow, which may be a strong warning against RT if confirmed. What I can say is, there are a couple of other free/open source apps, like RawTherapee (that I found a bit easier than DarkTable at first sight -but again: very little day-to-day experience) and the fully cross-platform LightZone.
