The drawing medium allows the actual ink to be painted onto the canvas using brushes or fingers and then can be wiped off or removed in its entirety at any time. This medium is a water-based paint that has the same consistency as watercolors. I used a paint-like drawing medium called gouache as my underpaint for these pieces. But the more you want to make the painting different from its background, then the more important it becomes to use an underpainting that acts as a sort of camouflage. The main concern with painting on such a blank canvas is that you can’t hide any bad work it will be visible immediately. The works are primed on the outside and directly onto the back of the primed surface.
#Blank paint canvas series
This work is a series of paintings made on canvas using multiple warm and cool shades of white, yellow, and indigo. This project seeks to investigate what happens when pure white surfaces are painted with less than pure colors. The blankness of white is a formless void that suggests infinity and even coldness, but also creates a connotation of innocence, simplicity, and purity.
For me, whiteness is a pure and direct expression of light without any tints or dark tones clouding its purity or brightness. White is the preferred color in cases when no form is needed instead, white surfaces are pure and unfractured. White flowers have no scent but they do have subtle colors that make them more appealing to our eyes than their other-colored counterparts.īut white can also be a color that brings the appearance of form into the realm of abstraction.
In painting, white represents the highest form of purity in terms of light such light has no warmth but also no shadow. In architecture, white is usually seen as an unadulterated color with no hues, tints, or blends that give it the impression of being anything other than the creation it is: a clean slate from which all other colors are derived.
